TV Signs KG for LBL in KY/TN

Did you understand the title of this blog post?  No?  Then you haven’t been paying attention at all, have you?  Let me decipher the code for you…

*********************************************************************************************

TV= Team Virtus (duh!)

KG = Kage (formerly known as Kate Geisen), but we’ll also accept SuperKate

LBL = Land Between the Lakes 24 Hour Adventure Race

KY/TN = Kentucky/Tennessee

*********************************************************************************************

That’s right, boys and girls.  Team Virtus has gone coed, and we’ll be competing in the 4-person coed division (aka- the “Elite” division).  What’s funny about competing in the “Elite” division is that Team Virtus has been called “Missouri’s Least Elite Adventure Racing Team” in print.

But that was before we got smart and allowed… uh… invited… uh… asked really nicely… Okay, fine… That was before we begged Kage to join our team and race with us at the LBL 24.  We must have asked her before she downed her morning cup o’ Joe since she graciously accepted our offer (probably out of pity), and now Team Virtus has instantly become a stronger, better looking, more stylish (check out the socks in the photo below), and less hairy team.

Kage Jumping a creek

The first time I ever met Kage was when she beat me in the Castlewood Cup 15K Trail Race.  But I really got to know Kage at the Deuce Adventure Non-Race last year.  It was at the Deuce where I learned that she would make a great teammate.  I tagged along with Kage at the Deuce since she was a newby.  I was just there to teach her some basic navigation skills and make sure she didn’t die.  Not only did she survive, she excelled.  Not one single time did she complain.  Even when she was lost, or tired, or sore, or wet, or hungry, or sitting in a Pack Raft backwards:

Oh, and did I mention she did all of this the day after running 21 miles that left her with blisters and aching feet?!?!?  Clearly, Kage is much, much tougher than me.  I just went and re-read her race report from the Deuce,  and if you want to get an idea of Kage’s personality, you should read it too.

It’s always weird for us to bring on new teammates.  Bob and I started this team and this blog because we thought it would be fun.  We never thought anyone other than our parents would actually read it, and we definitely never thought anyone other than my brother, my cousin, and my friend, Drew would want to be on the team.  So it’s awkward for us to ask someone to join us.  In fact, it usually takes us way too long (as was the case when Adam, Robby, and Rusty joined the team).  In fact, it’s taken us almost a year too long to get Kage on board.  I can’t believe she hasn’t been snatched up by a much better team already.  Take a look at our comments from her Deuce report:

Comments on Kage's Blog

Both Bob and I pretty much said she should be on our team almost a year ago, but we are always hesitant to come out and make it official by asking someone to come on board.  It just seems like by asking someone to be on our team, we’re assuming that we are this amazing team that everyone wants to join.  As much as we joke about how awesome we are, it’s always in a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek kind of way.  But we are humbled that Kage has agreed to join us.

So Kage, Bob, Casey, and I will be racing at the LBL 24 Hour Adventure race on March 24th – 25th.  We apologize in advance to all of you racing at LBL in the all-male division.  There will be one less team for you to finish ahead of.  And for those of you in the “Elite” Coed Division, I would normally joke about how you should prepare to lose to us.  However, with Kage on the team, it might not be a joke after all.

  1. That is fantastic!!! I just wish I could be there to witness it. You guys keep making a name for yourselves, but I’m not so sure anyone expected a co-ed team…with all the hairy man bravado, fart wars, and “hate” towards Adam. It does seem Super Kate can hold her own in almost all categories…maybe shaving abstinence is in order until after the the race. I can see it now, braided arm pits. Good luck! Already looking forward to this race report from Kate’s and guys perspectives.

    • No….I’d rather eat dog food (which won’t happen either). I’ll be well-equipped with my bearded beanie, my sense of humor, and some strategically timed allergy medicine (I’ll wait to take it until my risk of being in an enclosed space with them is low). I’m so looking forward to this race!

    • Susy, we actually never expected a coed team either. We never thought a female would want to race with us, let alone be able to stand us for that long. And yes, Kage can not only hold her own, she just might be dragging our sorry butts across the finish line! It should make for an interesting race report for sure.

  2. Asking me had to be the most low-pressure thing ever, since at the risk of sounding like Kathy Bates, I’m TV’s biggest fan…although Facebook Brandon may be trying to dethrone me, what with his lightning quick posting reflexes and all. That’s OK…I’m the first female member of TV, and he can’t take that away.

  3. Welcome Kate! Good to have you on board. Hopefully we will all get to hang out before I depart in May. Good luck at LBL! Can’t wait to read the reports.

  4. I remember when we were all riding Berryman and KG was trying to ride a rock garden. The conversation went something like this:

    Bob: “Come on, pussy!”
    Kate: “Fuck you”

If I would’ve had any reservations before that, (which I didn’t, btw), they were permanently erased.

  5. Ohhh Kate, you are so funny and a perfect fit for TV. And I had 2 by the way. However, calling me out like that is know way to get in good with me for when you plan your trip to Utah. Oh who am I kidding, I would love for TV to come out west for a race, or just for fun!

  6. Although I knew what all the initials meant, the first thing I think of every time I see the initials ‘KG’ is Tenacious D. I couldn’t find a link that was suitable for all audiences the help explain the connection, but I would imagine the majority of the readers here are well versed in the D.

Hope everyone has a great time at LBL. We aren’t going to be able to make it this year, So I will be looking forward to reading your race reports… and since you will have Kage with you, I suspect it will probably be posted the Monday morning after the race.

    • Derrick, the day that Jack Black (aka – JB or Jables) and Kyle Gass (aka – KG or Kage) formed Tenacious D was one of the greatest moments in Rock N Roll history. I’d like to think that someday, people will talk of the day that Team Virtus (aka – Tenacious V or The V) was formed in a similar way regarding the history of Adventure Racing.

And it took way too long for us to realize that Kate shared the same initials as Kyle, but when Bob finally realized it, Kage of Team Virtus was born. I think it has definitely surpassed “Dragon” as the coolest nickname on the team.

By the way, The D is coming out with a new album, Rize of the Phoenix. I will be purchasing it as soon as it’s available. And if they go on tour (fingers crossed), you can bet your ass that Bob and I will be there.

Can’t wait for LBL! We might even Powerslide across the finish line.

  7. Glad you finally join the team. I can’t believe you said no the first 8 times we asked you. Well you know what htey say, “9th time’s the charm.”

I look forward to racing with you. I have to apologize in advance for Luke’s and Bob’s inapproprioatet comments at the LBL. Hope to see you in a few weeks.

  8. I have to say that I think KG will be a great addition to your team. Any team would be lucky to have her, and vice versa she is fortunate to get to join the ranks of Team Virtus. I am sure there are other people out there that would like to join your team as well. It is hard to find good team mates, but Team Virtus has them. LBL is going to be a blast, it looks like I am going to be volunteering, but I will still get to hang out before and after the race. =)
